Heavy Snowfall At Tongariro

AUCKLAND Tue., (P.A.).—Snow at the Chateau Tongariro was thawing slowly this morning under the pale mid-winter sun after the heaviest fall this winter. Many guests enjoyed perfect skiing conditions. Eight to 10 inches of snow fell along the Desert Road. Motorists had to watch drifts. Heavy falls of snow over a wide area in the high country are reported. The weather was fine in most North Island districts today, but widespread frosts were recorded. Auckland had been enjoying an unusually mild early winter until yesterday afternoon when the temperature dropped from 55 to 43 degrees. Gusts fo wind rose to a velocity of 45 miles an hour and, throughout the night, there were frequent squalls. . (Snows in Southland.— P. 4.)
