Huge Scheme To Harness Nile

LONDON, Thu. (10 aim.)—A scheme to produce hydro-electric power and control the waters of the Nile at Owen Falls, in Uganda, would make possible the greatest development in that area, said the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin), in’ the House of Commons today. Giving details of the construction of the dam at Owen Falls, Mr Bevin said the British and Egyptian Governments had agreed that, although the dam would be administered and maintained by the Uganda Electricity Board, the Egyptian Government would regulate discharges from the dam. The scheme is expected to take 20 years to, complete.

It involves the construction o? two gigantic dams to harness the waters of the Blue Nile end the White Nile. The scheme is believed to be the biggest ever attempted and will provide sufficient water to increase thp cultivable land in Egypt and the Sudan by millions of acres.
