Main Ngauruhoe

Ve nt Plugged

AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.).—A 70yard wide lava plug now blocks the vent in the crater of Mt. Ngauruhoe from which the main lava flow , came in the recent eruption. Mr P. Nilsson, a student on vacation from the New Zealand Missionary College, Longburn, made this discovery late last week when he accomplished what he . believed to be the first descent into the bottom of the crater since 1 the eruption. He walked on the tholoid, which he believed had developed in the last five weeks, and found it cold, with a few wisps of, steam still rising from it. The main activity was coming from a vent in the north-eastern portion of the crater. A third vent was’lnactive.
