Court Hearing In Ambulance
AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.)—A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday in a St John ambulance to hear the evidence of a bed-ridden woman, Mrs Hannah Beard, plaintiff in a tenancy action. Also in the ambulance were the magistrate (Mr F. McCarthy), two counsel and two reporters. Defendant was Chief Petty Officer Thomas Henry Morton, of HMNZS Bellona.
Mrs Beard, in evidence, stated tearfully that the Mortons rented part of her house at Takapuna, undertaking that while she would pay for food, they would look after her and keep the lawns tidy. . After five days they put locks on the door, cutting her off. On March 15 she married Mr Beard, but he had left, as there was no room for him. After cross-examination, the hearing proceeded in the courtroom. Defendant. gave evidence that Mrs Heard said she required only a cup of tea in the mornings. He denied that she was locked out. He had actively sought other accommodation and would prefer to be elsewhere if he could get a decent place. The magistrate reserved his decision.
