Many Wish To Remain British
Irish In Australia . . .
SYDNEY, Wed. (1 p.m.)— Since Eire became a republic, many Irishmen in Australia have registered as Australian citizens, renouncing their Irish citizenship, according to a Sydney Morning Herald staff correspondent. He claims that other Irishmen, who were British subjects, but not eligible for Australian citizenship, have applied to retain their British nationality. . Commonwealth immigration officials say that the number of Irishmen who have taken these steps represents a considerable proportion of Irish citizens in this country.
Australia made special provision for her Irish residents in the Nationality and Citizens Act, passed last year. The Irish representative in Australia (Mr T, J. Kiernan) says that Irish citizens in Australia need take no action unless they wish to become Australian citizens.
