MAKE MATCHES BURN LONGER
Whangarei smokers may shortly be lighting their-cigarettes with flint and steel.
This extreme position has become a possibility with the growing shortage of matches, which one retailer described this morning as “hopeless.”
Inquiries revealed that not even cardboard folder matches are available in anything like sufficient numbers.
One grocer considered himself lucky to have a small stock of wooden matches, but he appeared to be the only retailer in tire borough to be in such a fortunate position.
His stocks will apparently have have to last until the end of July or August, when a shipment of English matches is due to arrive in New Zealand.
One tobacconist reported that he had received no stocks for over a month.
