Contact With Master Bandit
/PALERMO, Mon. (11 a.m.)—A force of about 5090 police, troops and carabinieri made contact today in the caveriddled mountain fastness of Sicily’s Montelpre area, with forces of the master bandit, Salvatore Giuliano, when patrols of the anti-bandit army ran into an ambush and suffered the first casualties in this operation. At least three police were seriously injured before Giuliano’s desperadoes drifted away as unobtrusively as the smoke from their bursting grenades.
The anli-bandit force casualties since 1945 now number 70 dead and about twice that number wounded.
The police, who believe Giuliano would welcome an open battle and the opportunity it might give for escape from the encircling troops and island, may try to starve him out. This lias its disadvantages, because the people of the hills, partly in fear and partly in genuine sympathy, assist and feed the bandit band.
