Neon lights Used By Rand Churches
CAPETOWN, Thu. (1 p.m.) Churches in the Rand are. resorting to advertising and Neon lighting to attract congregations. * The Witwatersrand Church Councif decided last year to advertise in spite of stiff opposition from ministers of the old school.
The first piece of commercial advertising for a church in South Africa appeared on a slide in a Johannesburg cinema.
The words “Go To Church” appear under a picture of a coagregatiqn in a cathedral. s '~«—*
A verse from the Bible is repro-' duced. The Witwatersrand Church Council is satisfied that the advertisement has caused many people who never give church-going a thought, to search their consciences.
How many it has actually brought to church it is difficult to tell.
High costs of advertising and the many calls on its finances have prevented the council from embarking on a full-scale “Back to Church” campaign, but Johannesburg firms have been interested enough to sponsor slides.
The message “Jesus Saves” is flashed in red Neon lighting outside a number of church halls in the Rand and some churches have put their names up in Neon lights.
