Short Notice For Works Programme

PAPAROA. Fri. (Sp.).—On February 8 the Otamatea County Council’s engineer (Mr A. V/. Tassell) received a letter from the Public Works Department resident engineer at Maungaturoto, requesting a schedule of proposed county works upon which the council would be making application for Government subsidy under the state subsidised works programme for 1949-50 and 1950-51.

The information was to reach the Whangarei office by February 9, the letter slated.

This was revealed when Mr Tassell presented his report at the council’s monthly meeting.

Councillors expressed indignation that such short notice should be served and resolved to place the matter before the next No. 1 Ward counties’ conference.

Mr Tassell said that owing to the limited time available he was unable to consult the council and had submitted a tentative list for consideration by the department. The chairman (Cr T. H. C. Snelling) said it was wrong that the engineer should be unable to consult his council. Cr H. S. McCarroll: It would not be so bad if we were ever able to put the “hurry-up” on the department.
