Powell Cop Race

Real sailing weather was enjoyed by the 14 boats which competed in the Whangarei Cruising Club's race to Parua Bay for the Powell Cup on Saturday.

The winner was the 14ft Jellicoe class All Bind: owned by the club commodore (Mr E. R. K. Wilkinson) with Insolence, a 14ft Ilighet boat build bv D. Butler of Whangarei, and owned by B. O’Do noghue second, and K. Gwyn's Idle Along, Zephyr third. With a fresh south westerly wind blowing, (he run from Port Whangarei to Onerahi gave the boats a tight lead with the limit boats well alic-ad in the Mark Foy start.

A. Attwood's Kia Ora overhauled the lighter boats going well on her besl sailing point, but she skied her spinnaker in the flat run to the Onerahi Flash and was not dangerous from then on.

Namu. a IG-footer owned by T. Linncll, was in difficulties when she rounded up in Long Beach and narrowly avoided capsizing. Later she carried away tire strop on her spinnaker poom. LIGHT CREWS

All small boats except D. Butler's Lconie and B. G’Bonoghue's Insolence carried light crews, and they had difficulty with the squalls with full kite up.

Spinnaker and dinghy trouble reduced the chance of the only A class boal (I. Nicholls’ Aquila) that might have overtaken the limit boats. TOOK CREW' ABOARD

E. Ryan’s Mercury had a run of bad luck in the leg from the flash to One Tree Point, as she was planing very fast off the wind and parted a backstay.

Down near the mark off One Tree Point All Black was overhauling the Idle Along yacht, Zephyr, which was going particularly well, when the limit boat. Rosalie capsized. All olack rounded up, took the crew aboard and continued with the race, considerably handicapped by the extra weight.

In spite of this, Whangarei’s fast .Jellicoe jboat won outright—a particularly line performance. GOOD HANDICAPPING

Insolence, having come steadily through the fleet to save most of her handicap overhauled All Black to finish in second place 30s behind the commodore’s boat.

Zephyr took third position a minute later.

In a course of approximately nine miles such a close finish shows good handicapping.

Mr E. Ryan in his launch Blue Bird went in search of Rosalie and found her drifting well up channel.

Sanders Trials

All Black strengthened her position as a Sanders Cup representative when she defeated G. Palmer’s Aries by 121 minutes in the second trial race held over a nine mile course in Parua Bay on Sunday.

Tire starting point was off the Farua Bay Hotel, with the first leg a close lead to Peach Point Beacon, followed by a close haul to One Tree Point. All Black showed her superiority on all points of sailing by drawing steadily ahead throughout the course.
