Original Road To Spirits Bay May Be Repaired

KAITAIA, Sat. (Sp.)— In preparation for tourist traffic, roads in the further northern peninsula are now being given special attention by Mangonui County Council staff. An endeavour is being made to provide an access to Spirits Bay by repairing the original road which, through the neglect of many years, had become impassable to motor traffic, the council’s engineer (Mr A. M. Theed) said yesterday.

Roads leading to Te Hapua and Parengarenga are expected to be easily negotiable as the'result of work now in hand. To reach the furthest north tourists will have the choice of either the 90Mile Beach route from Waipapakauri access road to Te Paki stream, or the inland county road via Houhora and Te Kao. Intending visitors are'again reminded that roads traversing the Te Paki station have not yet been legalised and that permission from Messrs

The condition of the causeway enabling beach traffic to negotiate the danger point at Mangonui Bluff on 90Mile Beach is reported to be considerably improved as the result of sand movements. In the past, several motor vehicles trapped in the sea have been lost or damaged at this point. If present conditions continue, motorists should have the choice of two roads at Ahipara, at the lower end of 90-Mile Beach. Most popular with visitors, the foreshore road has always provided good access, but the beach township road now provides what should J prove a direct route on to the beach | as the result of changed stream levels. ]
