Airmen Honoured By U.S. Government
WELLINGTON, Tue. <P.A.) “The United States armed forces entered the war in the Pacific with insufficient knowledge of island areas, methods of construction and transportation, and knowledge of Pacific weather,” said the Minister for the United States (Mr R, M. Scotten) at the investiture of four leading New Zealand Air Force officers held at the residence of the air attache, Lieutenant-Colonel O. H. Rigley.
The decoration conferred was the Legion of Merit, degree of officer. Air Vice-Marshal A. de T. Nevill, C. 8., C.3.E., gave the United States armed forces outstanding aid in both logistic and operations planning and execution. Mr Scotten proceeded.
Wing Commander E. A. Gibson, 0.8. E., constructed a chain of airports which provided a land-based air route from Hawaii to the South Pacific area. Wing Commander M. A. F. Barnett, C.8.E., furnished a vital meteorological service.
Wing Commander L. F. P. Taylor, in the field of radio navigational aids and flight control, averted a critical situation in the operation of American aircraft between Fiji and Australia.
