Hope To Raise £IOOO . From Whangarei Carnival

OVER £IOOO is expected to be raised by the community carnival week to be held by the Whangarei District Progressive Society from November 8 to 13. This money will be used to help pay for the society’s property behind the Whangarei Public Library, which will eventually be turned over to the community

Details of the proposed programme for the week were put before the society’s executive meeting last night by the organiser (Mr N. Harrison).

Recordings may be taken of the highlights of the week for future broadcasts over IZB, Auckland, and over Whangarei’s new station. IXN, when it is built, Mr Harrison said. A "Miss Whangarei” contest will begin in a few days’ time and will continue until November 13. About 15 candidates have come forward, supported by business firms and other organisations. MISS WHANGAREI Films will be taken of all the contestants and will probably be shown in local theatres. ’• The carnival week proper will commence on Monday, November 8, with a marching display in the afternoon, led by the Whangarei Pipe Band. Stalls will be erected for lucky-dips and other games, and the town will be decorated. In the evening a quiz will be held at the Town Hall, with audience participation. A two-day musical festival will begin on the Tuesday. MUSICAL FESTIVAL This will probably be under the auspices of the Whangarei Community Arts Service, and will be run on the same lines as the music - competitions held in the main New Zealand centres. Vocal, instrumental and elocution classes will be included. In the evening, an event run on the lines of. a race meeting will be held in the Town Hall. Jockeys will ride mechanical contraptions across the stage, and the method of propulsion is being kept secret. . Whisky, by Always out of Stock, will race against Milk, by Water out of Tap, and Dead Heat, by Kitty out of Rink, together with other thoroughbreds. Wednesday has been scheduled for the continuation of the music competitions, and the finals will be held in the evening. It is hoped that this will become an annual event, running for a week. . OTHER ATTRACTIONS Schoolchildren’s sports will be held on the Thursday, if a holiday can be granted. A second and greater quiz will be held that evening. No carnival would be complete without a mock court,. and the Borough Council's permission is being sought

to block off a section of the town on Friday afternoon for this purpose. Friday will be a gala day, with a procession and fireworks. Something new is on the programme for Friday evening. A variety concert will be staged by primary schoolchildren. and the children will run everything, including the ticket-office and the necessary ushering. GYMKHANA The Titoki gymkhana is to be run in cooperation with the Progressive Society on Saturday. This will take place at a park in Whangarei, and will probably be the biggest event of the week. Equestrian and athletic sports will be included. The final event of the carnival will take place at the Town Basin. Boxing, with M. T. Khan and other top-notch Northlanders competing against Aucklanders, games and side shows are set down for that night. Highland dancing may possibly take place, and the final of the Miss Whangarei contest will be held. This whole programme is tentative, depending largely on arrangements with the various bodies affected.
