(Sn.)—By a mar- • tin of one point, Miss Mona Ross, of J Dunedin, won the John Court MemorI ial aria contest of £IOO, before a large 1 audience in the Town Hall on Satur- ; day night. Mr Arthur Downs was ’■ placed second, with 90 marks, and the ! other two recalls, Miss Valerie Isbister I and Mr Ramon Opic. were third, equal, j The adjudicator, Mr Stanley Oliver, j said the four recalls all had really j good voices, three of them with real i operatic timbre. The emotional con- | tent of the selections was well under- | stood and well sustained. Miss Ross i created an atmosphere of emotional ] tenseness, b'ut never failed to sing well, | which was essential, especially in Itali ian opera.
