Tokomaru Dispute
GISBORNE, Mon. (Sp.).—Tomorrow the Waterfront Industry Commission opens a hearing into the dispute at Tokomaru Bay concerning watersiders’ pay.
The dispute has stopped the handling of cargo since the middle of July. Representatives of shipping interests and the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union will also sit with the commission.
Dr Frederick William Helmore, medical officer in HMNZS Achilles and HMNZS Tamaki in the latter half of the Second World War, has died in the Christchurch Hospital after a short illness, aged 47. A member of a Christchurch family, he was educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School, Auckland Grammar School, and Dunedin and Edinburgh universities. During his service in the Navy, in which he reached the rank of surgeon-lieuten-ant-commander, he became well known in Auckland circles. On leaving the Navy he returned to private medical practice in Christchurch.
