Whangarei’s 4 Wins Against N. Wairoa

HOCKEY

All four Whangarei representative hockey teams won their matches against Northern Wairoa at Kensington Park on Saturday. The Whangarei teams were made up of players who had not represented Whangarei this season. Both men’s teams won by comfortable margins, the A 6—nil and the 3 s—l.

The ladies’ matches were slightly closer, the B team succeeding I—o and the A by three goals to nil. The games revealed likely talent for Whangarei’s 1949 teams. In the men’s A game the defence of the Whangarei side was the outstanding factor. J. Collier executed many good saves, as did the other fullback, B. Price The forwards were restrained, although some movements between L. Cotton and S. Carter brought up the score.

Wairoa’s centre forward, J. Wind strand, and Weir, the left inside, were dangerous and took a lot of marking. Worthington, as the visiting centre half, played well although his efforts ■were mostly solo.

T. Shoebridge scored a good goal for Whangarei when he came up from the halves to beat all the defence and net the ball.

The Wairoa custodian Ormandy was slightly off in the beginning of the game, but showed good form in the second half. R GAME BETTER

The men’s B teams turned on a better exhibition. Playing his second game of the day, Weir was the outstanding player in the visiting side.

As centre forward, he was fast on the bullies and followed them up with effectiveness.

The two visiting fullbacks played a great game and often put their opposing forwards off-side. Bargh was the better of the two backs and cleared with accuracy. The Whangarei forwards were good on attack, but lost advantages by offsides.

J. Rowlands, the Whangarei pivot, did well at covering the bullies and fed his forwards on every possible occasion.

G. Cavaye played a good game in the halves. LADIES’ GAMES DISAPPOINT

The ladies’ matches were not up to usual standards. In the A match, P. Thomas scored two of the three goals from purely solo efforts. K. Jones, on the left wing, made some good runs down the line and showed considerable speed. She scored the third goal. Combination was thrown to the winds on many occasions and solo efforts were the order. Wairoa’s centre forward R. Martin, was about the fastest player on the field and caused the opposing backs considerable worry. All through the game, Northern Wairoa had the edge on Whangarei and the score was no indication of the. run of play. WAIROA UNLUCKY In the other ladies’ game, Wairoa was unlucky to lose by the only goal scored by M. McDonald. Wairoa had it all over Whangarei in the forwards, but the sureness of the Whangarei backs kept the opposition in check. *

F. Haora made some good saves for the home team.

J. Megson and E. Stayward, the two visiting backs, guarded their goal well and cleared with colid hitting.
