Report On Abolition Of Moat Rationing

■ WELLINGTON, Wed. (Sp.).—The opinion that a review ot the current meat price order should be proceeded with immediately was expressed in the majority report of the Fresh Meat Supplies Commission tabled by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Nordmeyer) in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

The report expressed the opinion that abolition of meat rationing would assist the butchery trade and that a report should therefore be obtained from the Government Statistician, acting in conjunction with other Government departments concerned.

If the report showed that the saving from rationing was not material, rationing should be abolished. The majority report also recommended that a review of the existing meat price order should be proceeded with immediately, and while the investigation was being made, the Price Tribunal should examine and give due consideration to the effect on the industry of the alleged widespread evasion of the price order, rationing, grading, extension of the export houses to the local meat trade, the high winter price for stock, particularly in the South Island, and the seasonal price increases in both islands, which, it was contended by the master butchers, were inadequate as to amount and duration.
