Heavy Snow In Australia
SYDNEY, Tue. (1 p.m.).—A sudden return to wintry weather, with hail, rain sleet and snow, is reported from New South Wales Victoria and South Australia.
Snow fell last night over many thousands of square miles, and in some areas was the heaviest ever known. The first snowfalls for over 40 years were reported from districts north and west of Farkes, with the fields extending as far as Dubbo. At midnight, residents of Orange were ski-ing in the main street and snow battles were in progress. South Australia had the heaviest snowfalls in its history, extending over 1500 square miles in the central and northern parts of the state. In Sydney the temperature dropped from 59 to 49 degrees in an hour, and fierce westerlies caused damage.
Many country districts have had good falls of rain, and more snow and rain are forecast for the southern tablelands today.
