Hardest Task For Otago

DUNEDIN, Mon. (P.A.).—Otago faced its hardest task to dale when it met Wanganui in the third Ranfuriy Shield challenge match of the season at Carisbrook, but the sterling efforts of the forwards and superior finish of tire backs enabled the home side to win by 20 points to 3. In spite of the mounting score Wanganui fought back fiercely and there were some torrid exchanges among the forwards.

The superiority of Otago in hooking, rucking and lineout play was partially nullified by the spoiling tactics of Wanganui. The speedy Otago backs, however, penetrated the defence to score five times. ALL GOOD FORWARDS There was not one poor forward on the field, but Willocks, O’Connor and McNab stood out in the Otago pack, and Granville, Pedley and Beard for the losers. The Wanganui backs were quick to get up on their opponents, but Haig Woodhouse and Elvidge managed to find gaps in the defence. Meates outclassed his opponent, Henderson, and scored three excellent tries. Gudscll was the best of the Wanganui backs defending well and giving thrust to the attack. Tries were scored for the winners by Meates (3), Haig and Woodhouse. Haig converted one and Kearney potted a goal. Beard scored for Wanganui and was the first player to cross the Otago line this season.
