Today's War Anniversaries
Today, four years ago, a dramatic development occurred in the history of the war when Rumania capitulated and joined the United Nations.
On the same day Paris was freed by Maquis and Marseilles was liberated by French invasion forces. Announcing Rumania’s acceptance of the Allied peace terms, King Michael said that the country would become an ally of the United Nations, and ordered that the whole country resist any German retaliation.
Twenty thousand Maquis inside Paris and thousands of citizens rose, following General Koenig's call to revolt, and after a four-day battle drove the German overlord from the French capital. ,In the south, French forces took France’s second city and greatest port, Marseilles, without resistance.
From Paris the Maquis began to battle for Lyons, and linked up with American armour 30 miles from Bordeaux.
Today also marks the fourth anniversary of one of the heaviest flyingbomb raids on London and Southern England. As if they were trying to get rid of their stocks while they could, the Germans caused considerable damage, with many casualties as a result.
