Opium Smuggled Into Singapore

SINGAPORE. Thu. (1.30 p.m.)— Reliable confirmation was today obtained in Singapore that smuggled opium has, during the past \Vcek. been flown out of Indonesia aboard an Australianmanned Catalina which landed outside the three-mile limit off Singapore Island.

The opium was then transferred to boats and was “now undoubtedly in Singapore.” The Catalina was captained by an Australian “major” and manned by two other Australians.

Ski Championships INVERCARGILL. Sat. (P.A.).—The final event of the New Zealand ski championships was decided at Coronet Peak yesterday. The jumping resulted in a win for A. Divers (Otago club), with Lin Challis (Southland) runner up. and A. Williams (Stratford club) third. Distances were: Divers 61.7 ft. Challis GO.Oft and Williams 56.8 ft. Robbed By Thugs SYDNEY. Fri. (11.30 a.m.)—Arriving at a house, occupied by an elderly couple in Surrey Hills, with two sugarbags full of beer, an armed gang of seven men forced their way in, tied up the couple and settled down to a drinking party. Between drinks, the thugs searched the house and threatened the occupants with a pistol. The gang remained in possession some hours and departed with jewellery and money valued at £7OO. Russels Regatta Club RUSSELL. Sat. (Sp.).—At a wellattended meeting of the Russell Regatta Club the outgoing committee was re-elected and the vacancy caused by the removal from Russell of Mr Pat Donahue was filled by the election of Mr F. Lovell. Mr Lovell exhibited a National Film unit’s reel on the recent Yale University fishing expedition to Otehei Bay. The annual meeting decided that the next regatta will be held on December 28.
