American Athletes Beat Empire Team

LONDON, Thu. (10 a.m.) —A British Empire team this afternoon sensationally defeated the American Olympic relay winners—Ewell, Wright, Dillard and Patton. v Two Australians, Treloar and Bartram, and two Britishers, McCorquodale and Archer, comprised the Empire quartet. The Australians’ brilliant running was mainly responsible for the defeat of the Americans. McCorquodale had a two-yard lead on the negro sprinter, Ewell, at the first baton change. Bartram then passed the baton to Treloar three yards ahead of Wright. Treloar held his own with the Olympic champion, Dillard. Archer took the baton from Treloar and won in an exciting finish by three yards. AUSTRALIANS PROMINENT The Americans outclassed the Empire athletes in the 120 yards hurdles. Australian athletes were mainly responsible for the Empire’s 34 wins—the high jump, 400 metres relay, and long jump. The United States had 111 wins.
