Whamgorei Basketball

An outline of the type of trials which will be carried out as part of the investigations into foot troubles with pigs in Northland, was given by the supervisor to the Northland District Fig Council (Mr H. H. Preston) at the council’s meeting at Whangarei today. In his report Mr Preston said arrangements were well in hand for the trials which had been organised by the Department of Agriculture’s veterinary officer at Whangarei (Mr D. M. Corbett).

Pigs would be housed on timber as against concrete. Some would receive mineral feeding, while others would receive a diet in which there were no minerals

Vitamin feeding as opposed to no vitamins would be carried out, and the same would be done with meals. The complete disinfecting of sties would also be undertaken for some trials. The trials covered all requirements, and it was hoped that the cause of t ! trouble would be revealed, Mr Preston reported. REPORTING DISEASES On the subject of pig diseases a letter was received from the national superintendent (Mr li. M. Peirson) asking that full details of troubles encountered should be recorded by supervisors. Mr Preston stated, in reply to this request, that the major troubles in Northland had been foot-rot. with spasmodic outbreaks of neucrotic ulcers and samonella suipestifier infection. Owing to the excellent coverage of the Northland council’s area with stock inspectors and veterinarians, all pig diseases were notified direct to these officers bv the farmers. However, he would keep a detailed record of diseases encountered during the coming season.
