l2 Murders Committed In Dominion In Year
WELLINGTON, Wed. (Sp.).—During the year ended March •°'L 12 murders were committed in New Zealand compared with 10 the previous year. This is stated in the annual report of the Police Department, tabled in the House of Representatives yesterday.
The number of offences reported to the police during the year ended December 31 showed an aggregate net increase of Gl2 on the figures for 194 G. There had been a decrease in the prevalence e of unlawful conversion of motor vet hides. The number of cases of drunkenness had increased by 395. An increase was also shown in the number of pro- ! secutions for being intoxicated in charge of motor vehicles. Bookmaker’s were fined a total of £15,108 during the year ended March 81. Prosecutions under the Gaming Act totalled 518, compared with 521 in the previous year. There were 266 prosecutions for bookmaking, and these resulted in 264 convictions. POLICE RECRUITS The number of members of the police force was 1520, there being an increase I of 23 during the year. In the detective branch there were 13 senior detectI ives and 44 detective-sergeants against !37 detectives. The training school had been active throughout the year and a steady flow of fairly suitable appli- , cants had been forthcoming. ! Of the 32 women police, six were stationed in Auckland, eight in Wel- ■ hngton. four in Christchurch and two in Dunedin, and the remaining 12 (subsequently increased to 15) were undergoing a course of training in WellingI ton. The proportion of police to popu- | lation is shown as one to 1192.
