Theft From Employers Becoming ‘Norm'
AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.)—“He does not appear to have realised the seriousness of the offence,” said counsel for Ernest Victor Eckman, 31, boilermaker, when the latter pleaded guilty in the Police Court to stealing tools and steel valued at £45 from his employer, Winstone Ltd.
“He even said to me ‘Everybody’s doing it.’ ” - The magistrate (Mr J. H. Luxford): “That is the trouble these days. Everybody does seem to be doing it. “These thefts from employers arcbecoming such a norm that othei’s say, ‘W r e will do it, too.’ ”
The police said Eckman was a foreman receiving slightly over £lO a week in wages.
The magistrate said he should send him to prison for six months, but, in view of the circumstances, and with great hesitation, he would admit him to probation for two years, restitution of £45 to be made to the firm.
