Dunedin Folio Case First For Tear

DUNEDIN, Mon. (P.A.)—The first case of poliomyelitis—a child of 11 months—reported in the Dunedin health district since July 1, 1947, hus been admitted to hospital. Medical authorities said today that this was one of the isolated cases which were bound to occur sooner or later.

In fact, the city’s period of immunity had been much longer than usual. No further cases have been admitted to the Auckland Hospital since Friday. A positive case has been admitted to the Thames Hospital and the Paeroa primary school up to standard four has been closed. The remainder of the school is in a different building and is not closed. The school at Turua, near Thames will reopen today after having been closed for a fortnight on account of two positive cases of infantile paralysis occurring. Six suspected cases of Infantile paralysis were admitted to the Wellington Hospital during the week-end. One of these has been diagnosed as negative. Four of the five cases admitted on Friday are negative, the ather remaining on the suspected list. - NO DRASTIC STEPS Answering a question why Wellington schools were not closed now when the number of poliomyelitis cases was apparently greater than at Christmas, an official of the Health Department said today that the position was known to the department from day ,to day.
