Flying boats Stiff Aweit Certificates

AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.).—For three and a half months the Tasman Empire Airways Ltd’s four Tasman-class tiyingboats have been idle because no word has been received from the Civil Aviation branch of the Air Department concerning the return of their certificates of airworthiness. The only regular air service at present to Australia has been maintained by Skymaster planes chartered from Australian National Airways. Several thousand people, it is estimated. are waiting for transport across the Tasman. All of the four flyingboats were withdrawn from service on February 23. Three of them have now been modified and are lying at Mechanic’s Bay, while the fourth is awaiting the necessary modifications. Although no official announcement has been made, aviation circles will not be surprised to see Tasman Airways’ four flyingboats operating the transtasman run by the end of the month. It is expected the aircraft will return to service one at a time, the first probably in about a fortnight.
