President Deposed In Paraguayan Coup
NEW YORK, Fri. (Noon). The Paraguayan President (Higinio Morinigo), who was deposed yesterday by the Paraguayan Army as the result of a coup. Hvas placed under house arrest today in Ascuncion with some of his closest supporters.
The Government radio broadcast a communique stating that Dr Morinigo’s eight-year regime had ended :n his resignation “at the request of the armed forces and the people.”
The Chief Justice (Senor Juan Manuel Frutos) has been appointed provisional president pending the inauguration on August 15 of Senor Juan Natalicio Gonzales, who was elected as the next President in February in a poll which barred voters from casting votes for anyone else.
Senor Gonzales, who was Finance Minister in Dr Morinigo’s Cabinet, was the Government candidate.
