Johnson Hits Hard For Win
LONDON, Fri. (11.30 a.m.) —Australia defeated Hampshire by eight wickets. mainly because of lan Johnson's brilliant 74, which included three sixes.
Johnson had gone in when Australia was one for none and needed 182 on a-tricky, soft pitch in order to win.
The wicket was easier than it was yesterday, but was still difficult, and Hampshire, scenting the possibility of inflicting the first defeat on the Aus--1 tralians, went for runs from the start of play today. 45 MINUTES TO SPARE Miller and W. Johnston, however, were in great bowling form and the county was bundled out in two hours before lunch for 103, leaving Australia 182 to win in just under three hours. Brown and lan Johnson mastered the tricks of the pitch at its worst stage and later took toll of the bowling when the pitch improved. Johnson made his 74 in 73 minutes, and hit seven fours in addition to his three sixes. Australia won with 45 minutes to spare. HAMPSHIRE First innings: 195. Second innings: Arnold, c I. Johnson, b W.
