PARTY

AUCKLAND.—A sequel to a drinking party on the lawn behind St Matthew’s Church, Wellesley Street, on Monday night was the appearance of four seamen before Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., yesterday. They were Leslie Hellings, 24, who was charged with damaging a pane of glass valued at £4/18/-, and Garth Nurse Williams, 26, and Horace Evans, -.26, who were each charged with throwing a missile and drunkenness. A greaser, Matthew Peter Maher, was charged separately with drunkenness. The charges were admitted. Senior-Sergeant Southworth said that Hellings threw a bottle through a leadlight window, missing a valuable stained glass window. Williams and Evans also admitted throwing bottles at the church. Hellings, Williams and Evans were each fined £2 on the mischief charges. Fines of £ 1 each were imposed on Evans, Williams and Maher for drunkenness.
