Doctors Endorse Health Officers Polio Policy
WHANGAREI doctors have endorsed the policy adopted by the Northland medical officer of health (Dr J. L. Newman). Dr Newman had decided tfyat schools should not be closed or restrictions placed on attendance -at other public functions except in districts where cases of poliomyelitis had occurred.
Last night doctors practising in and around Whangarei held a largely-at-tended meeting at the Whangarei Hospital and discussed various methods of combating an. epidemic of poliomyelitis.
paralysis were reported in the Auckland Province yesterday, four in <jhe South Auckland health district and two in the Central Auckland district.
Three further suspected cases have occurred in the Central Auckland district.
Subsequently it was decided unanimously “that this meetiilg of medical practitioners expresses its confidence in the medical officer of health and is entirely in agreement with his policy.” No further suspected or positive cases of infantile paralysis have been reported in Northland. The new positive patients in the Auckland Hospital, are both adults frojn the city area. The new suspect cases are an adult from Waiuku, and two boys, one from the North Shore and the other from the city area. There were 44 positive and one sus-» pected patient in the hospital today. The four South Auckland positive cases are a girl, aged 12, and a male infant, aged three, both from the Rotorua district, a man aged 37 from Te Kuiti and a boy aged 10 from Ngaruawahia.
