County Clerk Made Chief Fire Officer
The Whangarei County Council at. its meeting yesterday appointed its clerk (Mr G. H. Lloyd) as chief fire officer for the area.
Under the Forest and Rural Fires Act the chief fire officer, by notification through the Press or radio/ may prevent fires being lit in the open for a stated period. It was agreed, however, that it would not be wise to prohibit fires completely, as farmers had to burn off scrub during the summer. “The Act was brought in to get at careless people,” said the chairman (Cr J. Morrison). LEFT TO DISCRETION
Cr R. N. Attwood: I don’t know how .we are going to work it withoul a permit system. Cr W. M. Fraser: We need control on our roads to protect the native .bush. If Mr Lloyd uses his discretion there will be no need to worry.
The chairman: We could fix a period when permits would be required to light fires. Cr H. A. Teal: Roadside and fencelines should be burned off to prevent cars being scratched. The responsibility is to be left in the hands of Mr Lloyd.
