Kamo

The February meeting of the Kamo Women’s Institute took the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs T. J. Griffin. Mrs Markwick presided over a good attendance of members. After business had been completed the time was spent in games and competitions. Occasion was taken to. present Mrs J. B. Logan with a gift, and regret was expressed at her departure from the district. Mrs Griffin was thanked for her hospitality. Whangarei Centre

The monthly meeting of the Whangarei Centre Women’s Institute was held in the Friendly Societies’ Hall. There was a very good attendance. Mrs Hirtzel (vice-presi-dent), in the absence of the president, conducted the meeting. Competitions resulted: Best crop of potatoes, grown from lib potatoes, Mrs Hirtzel (281bs) 1, Mrs Gordon (211bs) 2. Scones, Mrs Hirtzel 1, Mrs Courtney 2. Flower, Mrs Courtney 1, Mrs Dumbleton and Mrs Hirtzel equal 2. Mrs Wilcox judged the potatoes and flowers. Mrs Calder gave an interesting reading on “The Lone Soldier.”

Mrs Drummond, a visitor, sang "Angus McDonald” and for an encore “To a Miniature.” Mrs Corbett was appointed delegate to the Whangarei Federation meeting. Mrs Webb and Mrs Crawshaw were nominated as members of the new federation committee for the ensuing year. Mrs Thomson read a letter from the secretary of the Ely Institute, the branch’s English link. Several letters were received from members of Ely Institute thanking members for parcels received
