lore Slop-Gap Hill For Europe?

WASHINGTON, Thu. (11 a.m.). - President Truman today asked Congress for an additional $55,000,000 tc help tide Western Europe over unti: the European Recovery Programme i: enacted. Congress voted $540,000,000 temporary aid last autumn, including $18,000,000 for China. It was expected then that th is money would last until tiro Marshall Plan was passed, but, in a letter to the House Speaker (Mr Martin—R.-Massa-chusetts), Mr Truman said today: “Events which have taken place in Europe in recent weeks do not permit us, with safety or prudence, to risk a break in the supply flow at this moment. “I therefore hope Congress, will find it possible to make available the needed funds before April 1.” UNIONISTS ELATED British trade unionists are elated at the success of the International Trade Union conference on the Marshall Plan. The main outcome of the two-day talks, which ended yesterday, is the creation of a trades unions advisory committee, with headquarters in London. This continuing organisation is designed to secure the greatest possible cooperation in the Marshall Plan. If a breach occurs in the World Federal ion of Trade Unions over the Marshall Plan, some London leaders believe that the new advisory committee may prove the embryo of an organisation which, for Marshall Plan trade unions, could replace the WFTU. KEVIN’S PLANS The Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) leaves London on Sunday night for the Marshall Plan conference opening in Paris on Monday. He will probably go on to Brussels for the five-power Western-Union talks in the middle of next week. Expert discussions in Brussels arcproceeding “very satisfactorily.” Before his departure, Mr Bevin. will given the Dominions’ High Commissioners a general indication of the line he intends to take at the Paris and Brussels conferences.
