Swim In Node Was Costly

AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.)—When Royden Gvvyn Mitchell and George Roach Bartleet went for a bathe in the nude at Riverhead on Saturday evening, November 22 last, little did they think it would cost as 11111011 as when they appeared on summons before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court today. Because of fines levied by the magistrate, it cost Mitchell £l7/15/and Roach £7/15/-.

The sequel to the bathe was that both were charged with behaving in an offensive manner in view of a public place, while Mitchell, alone, was further charged with assaulting Frank Ilowlett.

Defendants, represented by Mr M Robinson, pleaded guilty. OBJECTOR “KNOCKED DOWN”

No November 22, said Senior-Ser-geant Southwcrth. defendants went for a bathe in the nude and could be seen from a public road. Howlett. an elderly man, went over to them and objected to their conduct, whereupon Mitchell followed him and knocked him down. Fortunately, no harm was done to Howlett.

Mr Robinson said neither defendant was bathing in view of the public road, although they could be seen from the bridge.

The bathing took place at 6.30 p.m and Howlett was the only person who saw them.

MADE OFF WITH CLOTHES

“Howlett started to make off with Mitchell's clothing and this caused my client some concern,' added counsel. "So Mitchell went after him. “There was a short struggle when Mitchell was endeavouring to get his trousers from Howlett." "This sort of conduct is most reprehensible," commented Mr Luxford, who fined each defendant £5 and ordered each to share £5/10/- costs incurred in bringing two witnesses j from Taupo. j For the assualt, Mitchell was fined | £lO. or 21 days' imprisonment. | The fines were ordered to be paid immediately, in default of imprison- J merit. ; TRANSLATION. English transla-U lions, printed in Italy, of the Italian I dramatic operas. "I Pnglared I (“Clowns") and “Cavallcria Rusticana" j (“One Rustic Cavalier") are in the. possession of a Whangaroi man. Iheyj were purchased at the Theatre Mali- 1 bran in Venice in 1932. and are prob-j ably irreplaceable. They are of great ' interest because of the many spelling j mistakes, wrong font letters, letU-sj upside down, lines transposed, and ex-j ceedingly bad punctuation. Some examples of spelling are “humly for humbly, “plesur” for pleasure, “rechd" for wretched, “falov" for follow.
