Readers Write ..,
Some confusion in the district is apparent concerning the proposed fertiliser works for Northland, and as information given by FERTILISER me at the recent WORKS farmers’ meeting at Whangarei appears to be misunderstood in some quarters, I desire to repeat as clearly as possible the statement regarding the saving to be effected by manufacturing in New Zealand in place of North Africa.
The saving was estimated at £3/10/per ton .and tnis figure included difference in freight between bulk and bagged phosphate, cost of manufacture, and certain profit, which items would remain in this country but now must be paid overseas. In other words, the saving would be in sterling funds or outgoings from New Zealand. On a 30.000-ton output, as was proposed in Northland, the saving to the country was shown to be £105.000 a year.
The figures are not mine, and were supplied by Ihe overseas promoters. The people operating in Northland were to be a New Zealand registered company, whose subscribers were m North Africa, London and New Zealand ,and so the taxation on profits made, if any, would also remain in lids country.—W. M. FRASER.
