Whangarei Branch Of Country Library Service
TO provide reading matter for Northland schools, the Country Library Service this week opened a branch operating from the Whangarei Public Library.
In charge is Mrs W. M. Latter, formerly one of a staff’ of five which, from Auckland, handled distribution of books to schools in Auckland and Northland.
In 1943 a branch operated from Whangarei but it was transferred back to Auckland.
With 102 schools to supply and more joining all the time, the service has a great number of books of all types in hand. VOLUME PER PUPIL Each pupil at every school is allotted one book each. The parcels are despatched to the various schools by rail, road transport, milk trucks or by whatever means are available. For schools with a roll of over 100 a partial change of 60 books in their selection is made every six months, whereas a school of under 100 has a partial change every four months. A full change of all books is made to all schools after one year's use. NO DUPLICATION
During this change books which are torn or dilapidated are rejected and replaced by new ones. No school receives the same books twice, a check being kept so as to safeguard against this. Mrs Latter will remain in charge of the Whangarei branch for about a year.
