206 Road Deaths In N.Z. Last Year
WELLINGTON. Wed. (P.A.).—Maps of New Zealand showing with coloured pins where the 206 fatal motor accidents occurred last year, delegates at today’s conference of the Road Safety Council, which was opened by the Minister of Transport (Mr Hackett). Although 2320 persons were killed in motor smashes in the past 12 years, he Minister was able to assure delegates that since the council was instituted in 1936, the death rate based on vehicle usage had steadily de-
based. In 1936 the death rate per million gallons of petrol used was 3.45, whereas is 1947 on the same basis it was 1.94.
He was hopeful that the latest figures would show at least a furtner 50 per cent reduction. The 106.000,000 gallons of petrol used last year was tne highest annual consumption in the past 12 years, tne lowest being 46,000,000 in 1942. The conference decided to ask that speed limits for buses—3s m.p.h. in rural areas and 30 in city areas—be enforced and that the traffic laws subcommittee look into the matter of speed restrictions.
