There is little hope of the Whangarei Rugby Union purchasing Weaver's Block before Carruth Block is completely built up by the State blousing Construction Department. When the Whangarei Borough Council affirmed its decision not to take over the property from the Government. tlie Rugby Union approached the Minister of Works direct in an effort io purchase. The following reply was received from Wellington this week: “Notwithstanding the council’s reaffirmation of its decision not to purchase Weaver’s Block for use as a recreation reserve, the land will be held undeveloped by the Crown at least until Carruth’s Block is fully built up. and perhaps even longer, in case tne council should, at any time within that period, revise its opinion in the matter.” The Commissioner of Works in

McKillop) inti-i mated that the Minister would be j happy to see a portion of Weaver’s • Block developed as a permanent home for Rugby, but lie feels strongly that, the ownership of the whole land should! be vested in the borough council for, recreational purposes, rather than itj should become vested in a number of j independent sporting associations, how-, ever reputable and permanent they) might be. ;
