Make 1948 Turning Point
LONDON. Tue. <ll a.m.) —The Economic White Paper presented in the House of Commons today says targets must be achieved this year to cut down the trade deficit and put Britain's economy on a sound basis. Priorities will he given to coal, steel, textiles and agriculture. The survey says textiles can make a great contribution if the efficiency of the industry is increased.
Longer working hours should also help a lot. but a large manpower increase is necessary.
The survey concludes that the 1948 outlook remains full of uncertainties. The coming year is hound to he one of great anxiety, but Britain can help make this the first year of a great upward turn in European economic recovery.
