Big Lake Drained To Extend Mine

AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.)—Pumping which started on December 13 and was completed last week has drained about 60,000,000 gallons of water out of an area of 30 acres at the southern end of Lake Kimihia to which the Kimihia open-cast mine is being extended. Seams up to 28ft thick under the area are estimated to contain 500;000 tons of coal. The depth of overbudren which will have to be stripped from above the seams ranges from 40ft to 70ft. All the coal in the northern part of the mine has been excayated and the spoil from the overburden has been replaced. From this area, 122,000 tons of coal have been won.
