Equal Rating Seen As Only Solution
Collection of native rates from butterfat cheques would result in reduced dairy output, Cr H. A. Teal said when the Whangarei County Council discussed the proposal today. With social security and wages at such a high level Cr Teal considered that the cows would be allowed to go out of production if rates were collected in this way. Cr Hewlett said that there was a growing feeling among the better class of Maori farmer that they would have to accept their share of responsibility in the matter of paying rates. The chairman (Mr J. Morrison) belieyed the only solution was to place the Maori on the same footing as the pakeha in the matter of rates.
