Desertion Of Ships Threatens Food
LONDON, Thu. (li a.m.)—Many British seamen, tired of Britain's austerity, were deserting at New Zealand and Australian ports, said a British Shipping Federation spokesman. The number of ship-jumpers had increased in recent weeks. It was feared that if the position gets worse food shipments to Britain may be delayed. The spokesman said the number of deserters was not as high as the 4000 reported, but numbers were greater than in 1946. Fifteen men deserted one ship in Australia recently. “This is serious, but the more serious problem is replacing them.”
