Missionaries Slain, Evacuating Others
SHANGHAI, Wed. (1.45 p.m.)—Evacuation by air of some 200 foreign, mostly American, missionaries marooned in the large missionary centre of Laohokow, about 200 miles northwest of Hankow, will begin tomorrow.
All evacuees will be taken to Hankow. The mass evacuation, which has been caused by the recent murder of three missionaries, will be carried out at top speed for fear of further killings in the Laohokow area.
The three slain missionaries were among a group of passengers required to alight from a regular passenger bus in Laohokow on January 7 by 50 armed troops, reportedly Communists.
After one soldier had said: “You are Americans, and Americans must die,” a Finnish doctor. Alexi Berg, was shot dead.
Then the group shot down two American women missionaries, after killing two Chinese who attempted to intervene.
