Import Licences For Trucks Doubled

WELLINGTON, Thu. ' (Sp.). A doubling of the value of the import licences for commercial motor vehicles from the United Kingdom will make it possible for 2000 such vehicles to be imported in 1948, instead of the 1000- j odd originally provided for. This advice has been received by the Wellington motor trade, which also understands that the Government is considering increasing the value of , licences for United Kingdom motor cars. ! The basic licence for commercial, vehicles from the United Kingdom is now 200 per cent of that for 1946, and | 300 per cent of that for 1938. The increase is £NZSOO,OOO in value, j making the total value this year £NZ 1.000,000. ! BRITAIN SEEKS INCREASE j The representative of the Society of | Motor Manufacturers, London (Mr A.; W. Hamilton Brown) said last night that British manufacturers and the United Kingdom Government were most anxious to export both commercial vehicles and motor cars to New Zealand.

Manufacturers had planned to send 20.000 vehicles to this country, but import restrictions at present would allow only 9000 motor cars and 2000 commercial vehicles.

Mr Brown considered that relaxation cf the restrictions would enable Britain to save badly needed dollars, and to maintain her volume of production so that vehicles could be produced at a low price to compete with foreign manufactured cars.
