Scientific Backing For Army Officers

CANBERRA, Thu. (11 a.m.)—Australian Army officers wquld be given a broader scientific background, because of the possibility of atomic warfare, said the commanding officer of Duntroon Military College (Brigadier E. L. Vowles). Officers with such a background would be equipped for any further training that might be decided on to equip the army for atomic warfare, he said. Atomic warfare was unlikely to affect 'tactical training, as “the company officers’ job is still to hold ground that has been taken.” Another senior officer said that atomic bombs would be used against cities and industries supplying armies, rather than against armies in the field, and that the only answer to atomic attack, was gradual dispersal.”
