Wellington Wins On First Innings

Plunket Shield . . .

AUCKLAND, Wed. <Sp.)— As expected, Wellington won the Eden Park Plunket Shield match against Auckland on the first innings. Canterbury now appears set to take the provincial premiership for the season. Its only danger is Otago, which it plays in the final game of the series, but the southernmost side must score an outright win to depose Canterbury from top position. Canterbury has scored 10 points, the same as Auckland, and Otago and Wellington have each scored six. An outright win to Otago would make its total 14 points, but a firstinnings win would make it 10 and Canterbury 12. With a deficit of 93 runs on the first innings, Auckland declared its second innings closed at 3.37 p.m. yesterday, with 283 runs scored for the loss of six wickets. This left Wellington requiring 191 runs in 133 minutes for outright victory. The southerners did not chase the runs, however, and the match petered out to a dull finish, with Wellington scoring 157 runs for the loss of two wickets. t C.'S. Dempster made 41, but his form was nothing like that he showed in his heyday. He and Reid put on 79 for the first wicket. Reid went on to make 69 not out, and proved himself a capable bat. Indians In Tasmania HOBART, Wed. (10 a.m.i—lndia beat Tasmania by an innings and 139 runs in the match which concluded at Hobart yesterday. Overnight rain softened the wicket and Tasmania was all out for 125 in its second innings. A stubborn partnership of 64 for the second wicket between Morrisby, who toured India with Ryder’s team before the war, and Walmsley, a former New South Wales all-rounder, provided the only really good batting.
