Northland Leads N.Z. In Increased Butter Output

WELLINGTON, Wed. (Sp.).—Northland leads New Zealand with an increase of 22.46 per cent in dairy production for the first four months of this season.

The percentage increase for the whole of the Dominion is 10.58 and for the Auckland Province 13.20. In November the overall butterfat output was 12.04 per cent higher than a year previously. # These figures were revealed yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Cullen).

In weight of butterfat the fourmonth Dominion increase had been 15,000,0001 b. he said. To the end of November, the Dominion had produced 157,200.0001 b of butterfat, second only to the 165,000,0001 b produced in the same period of the 1940-41 season.

Lamb killings in November were 89 per cent greater than a year previously.

Killings totalled 363,294 or 171,564 more than in November, 1946. Since then some of the North Island works had announced record daily killings, so that the November trend was expected to be maintained when the December returns were available. Early killings of lambs was important when large numbers of sheep and cattle had to be prepared for export later in the season.

“These are most encouraging figures at a time when the productive forces of the country are being marshalled to aid Britain,” said the Minister.

“They indicate a very real response by farmers to the call for increased productions. ■

VERY ENCOURAGING

“It is still too early in the season to begin counting our chickens, for our farm production is so dependent on favourable weather, that a prolonged dry spell in the immediate future would have disastrous effects. “However, production indications for the season so far are very encouraging.”

Export butter gradings for the five months ended December 31 were 79,800 tons, an increase of 9200 tons over gradings for the same period of the previous season.

Gradings for the last five months were higher than for any similar period for 11 years. Export cheese gradings also were ahead of the first five months of last season.

Meat export figures for November of 22,500 tons were more than double the November, 1946, total of 10,300
