Redistribution Of Federal Electorates

CANBERRA, Wed. (11.45 a.m.).—Redistribution of Federal electorates is inevitable this year, whether or not the size of Parliament is increased, according to the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley). The chief electoral officer also says that whatever the Government decision an electoral committee will be set up within the next few months to reallocate Federal seats. He explains that reallocation is already overdue, as the present boundaries were drawn up in 1934 and would have been reviewed after a lapse of 10 years had the war not intervened. Redistribution without an increase would give electorates an average of 67,000 voters each.
