Nuffield Award To Otago Pathologist
NELSON, Tue. (P.A.).—Each year under the fellowship endowment made by Lord Nuffield three awards are made in medicine and surgery. In addition three other awards are made in various subjects, including pathology. These three awards are shared each year amongst various subjects and between New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. This year the award in pathology was offered to New Zealand and has been accepted by the Otago Medical School. It has been granted to Dr N. P. Markham, who is making a special study of pathology. Dr ’Markham is a son of Mr and Mrs A. Markham, Oamaru. He was educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School and gained his medical degree at Otago Medical School. - After serving in several New Zealand hospitals he returned to the Medical School in Dunedin as an assistant to Dr d’Ath. AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY The award is for two years—l94B and 1949 —at Okford University Medical School and Radcliff Infirmary, Oxford. The appointment is under the direction of Sir Howard d’Lorey, co-discov-erer of penicillin, who delivered the Cawthron lecture in 1945.
The person appointed is required to serve in New Zealand for five years in teaching and/or in a research capacity. Dr Markham will proceed to England early in March by the Akaroa. He will be accompanied by Mrs Markham and their small son.
